I spend a lot of time outside, in a tree! Most of the time I am archery hunting in all types of weather, from hot to freezing cold,dry to soaking wet. The Walls 10X Lockdown Softshell jacket and pants are versatile enough to make my hunting life a lot easier.

Both pants and jacket are available in Realtree Xtra and Mossy Oak Country. They use YKK zippers on the jacket and pants, and most of the pockets, They are made using “335 GSM 2 layer bonded, back side brushed with anti pill and moisture management.”¹ The legs of the pants are pre-curved to provide greater range of movement, and have a comfort sliding waist for comfort. The jacket has an adjustable hem, inner sleeve cuff and ,like the pants, are fitted for an athletic fit. There is just a touch of fuscia trimming the clothing, nothing to much, just a bit of color. I ordered my jacket a size larger than I normally wear, so that I could layer up for colder weather, although the sizing already takes into account layers, so order the size you actually wear.

Our archery season doesn’t start until October 3rd, and runs until November 14. During that time, we finish up summer type weather, run thru fall weather, and finally have plenty of snow to foretell the winter. Hunting clothes needs to be adaptable to work in

Pennsylvania. We use lots of layers, and most everything is either water resistant or water proof. I started wearing my Lockdown clothing during our rut. Most days I would leave mid day to go out, and it would be in the 70’s, by the time I came in at night, the temperature would have dropped to the 40’s or even colder. I would tuck my jacket into my backpack going out, but would need it on each night walking back. Most evenings I would have multiple deer feeding around my stand. They never showed me the slightest interest, the Lockdown clothing kept me invisible to them.

While hunting, I was able to climb the ladders into my stands without binding or restriction. While waiting on my big buck, I was able to stay comfortable and the water resistant fabric helped keep me dry when spitting rain or heavy dew happened. The couple of times I spot and stalked, I belly crawled under briars, and pushed deep thru brush with out getting caught up or causing real damage to my clothes. Other than during the very early season, when it was 80 degrees with no cooling down int he evenings, the Lockdown worked for all the rest of the conditions! to keep my phone on my body instead of in my pack, just as a safety factor.

Late season archery starts after Christmas, and we have some of the worst weather of the year. We get extreme cold temperatures, wind chills and lots of snow. Several more layers will be added, and one of them will continue to be the Lockdown.

I have been wearing Hoo-rags bandanas for many years now. I first found them when I was testing for my Scuba diving certification. My dive instructor suggested I use one to help contain my hair, which was to short for a pony tail, but to long to just leave flowing. I needed to find out more about them at that point.

What I thought at first was just a sun protection used in the Southern States, is really much, much more. They are made of 100% polyester microfiber, which wicks away moisture and protects from the sun. The Hoo-rags are UPF rated 30. This tube of microfiber is highly stretchable, which makes it very versatile. You can wear the Hoo-rag in so many ways; the face mask, the neck gaiter, the balaclava, the headband, the pirate rag, the beanie, the pony tail holder and what they are calling the Alice rag, which is similar to a headband for women. Now when I was scuba diving, I wore my Hoo-rag covering my hair, I achieved this by pulling it over my head completely, then pulling it back up over my hair, leaving part covering my forehead. My dive mask kept the Hoo-rag in place, and it worked wonderful for keeping my hair out of my face, especially when I needed to remove my mask underwater.

don’t plan on wearing it on a specific day, I like to keep one in my backpack. My favorite way to use them for hunting is as a face mask, but I have also used it when the temperatures have dropped as either hand coverings, neck gaiters, or covering my head to keep in warmth. With all of the available patterns, you can find one that will work for any hunting season. But why stop there, get a couple and use them year round! There are many camo patterns to choose from, including; officially licensed Mossy Oak’s, Kryptek, Digital and Tactical. They also carry a High Viz Orange which would be perfect for firearm seasons.

You can design your own, or they will work with you to design your perfect Hoo-rag. My custom order started with an email of our Ladies in Camo logos in Vector File format. Within a couple of days, I had several ideas sent to me, based on my initial request. Soon I had agreed on an image, and production started!! Within 3 weeks of my original email, I had my custom made, super cool, Ladies In Camo HooRags in my hands!

My feet have always given me fits, and since I broke my foot in August, it has gotten even worse. In January I had several conventions that I needed to attend, and that means an awful lot of walking!

During the Industry Day at the Range during the SHOT Show, I was introduced to the Superfeet insoles. While visiting the booth, they offered to fit a pair of insoles to my boots. I was unsure of trying a new insole when I would be on my feet for 16 hours a day for the next 4 days, but, I WOULD be on my feet for 16 hours a day for the next 4 days! So off came the boots, and within minutes the insoles were cut to fit the boot perfectly. They used only a pair of scissors so the adaptations can be done easily at home.

I was informed that initially, I may feel some discomfort in my back, due to the insoles stabilizing my rear foot. Their theory is that the rear foot is the area most of the majority of foot motion originates, including; walking, running, standing. They also mentioned that movement adds stress upwards of 3-5 times your body weight in impact forces per step.

As I left their booth, my feet felt wonderful. Later that night, after walking almost 12 miles at the range, my back and feet both were killing me.  My first thought was to rip the insoles out of my boots, and put my old ones back in. Then I remembered them saying I could have some discomfort due to the stabilization of the rear foot, so I left the insoles in, and wore them for the rest of the show. The next day I walked about 9 miles, then 6 3/4 miles and finally 9 miles, for a total of 36.77 miles, according to my FitBit. After that first day I felt much more comfortable and for an added bonus, I did not suffer from leg cramps at night. Anyone who has gone to a convention with me knows I suffer badly from leg cramps when doing a lot of walking, due to my cancer medications. For what ever reason the leg cramps were not an issue during this show, it might be coincidence, or it might be with my rear foot stabilized, my body functioned correctly. Regardless of the reason, I will be putting Superfeet insoles in my other boots.

Many times while hunting, I have wished I knew what the weather conditions were at a specific treestand, but all I have been able to pull up is a generic weather forecast for the area. Now, with help from Kestrel, I can know the current conditions anywhere I place a DROP D3!

The Kestrel DROP is small, only 2.4 x 1.8 x 0.9 inches, and can perform environmental data logging anywhere you wish, wireless. You are able to view your current conditions in real time, with the log update being able to be changed from 2 seconds to as long as 12 hours.With the addition of the Kestrel Connect for iPhones, or I used the Kestrel Link for Android, you can view the conditions right on your phone. The DROP is small, rugged, accurate and waterproof! Hang the DROP by the attached loop to the area you want to monitor. The battery has a life of 6 months or up to 1 year depending on the user settings. With the app you can view, chart, record and monitor your conditions in which ever environment you choose to place it.

The app allows you to view the information your DROP has accumulated in several different views; dashboard, readings, stats and log. The Dashboard shows you the most current temperature, relative humidity, and heat stress. The Readings screen gives you the temperature, relative humidity, heat stress, dew point, station pressure and density altitude. The Stats screen shows you the maximum, minimum and average of the Readings screen. The Log screen puts the Readings screen into the 6 different logs, with the ability to select a date range to log. There is also a Manage screen which allows you to name you individual DROPs so you can quickly identify where the information is coming from. You can also set alerts to let you know when your criteria is met.

Generally, I would assume that the conditions would be the same, but with the placement of 2 DROPS, I found out that the creek bottom stand is always between 1 and 4 degrees colder than the Muddycreek stand up the hill from it. Now I am able to anticipate the differences better and be prepared for them. You are limited to the distance your cellular blue-tooth can connect with the Drop 3.

Recently I was on an extended work trip during some of the worst weather Pennsylvania experienced in 2016. For the first time ever, I had water pipes in my home freeze and burst. After the repairs were made, I needed to leave for an additional 3-4 weeks. To ease my mind, I placed the DROP near where the break had occurred, so my daughter could watch the temperature from her nearby home, and have someone respond before there was more damage. I set the alerts on the app to let her know if the temperature dropped below 38 degrees. Luckily she never received an alert, and the pipes didn’t freeze again.

Another use for the DROP 3 that I am going to utilize this summer, is monitoring my root cellar. We need to maintain a lower temperature and a stable humidity to keep my food stores properly. I had tried different thermometers, but they corroded quickly and were a waste of money. With the DROP being waterproof, I should not ever have that problem again.

If you spend time outdoors, or have kids in the outdoors, wet gloves and boots are inevitable. In years past we have placed our boots and gloves in front of the wood stove or on the furnace radiator. No always do we have access to those sources of heat. PEET Dryers lets you dry your boots and gloves anywhere you are, so long as there is an electric outlet.

While I was at the SHOT Show this year, I noticed a booth for Woolpower. They had a vest hanging, and I was immediately drawn to it. I started out just wearing this vest for last season hunting, and I loved it. Our late season can throw almost anything at you weather wise; cold, hot, wet, dry, snow, ice or rain. With this as a mid-layer, and appropriate base and outer layers. I was comfortable with what ever Mother Nature sent my way. After our season ended, I found myself reluctant to put the vest away till next fall, so instead I started wearing it for-EVERYTHING! I hate cold feet! Once my feet get cold, it seems I am never able to get warm. The ThermaCELL Heated Insoles help keep me in the stand, in the cold, all day long. I have owned the ThermaCELL Heated Insoles for many years, and just got a new pair this year. I like to buy my hunting boots 1/2 to 1 size bigger than I usually wear to allow for the slightly larger size of the Heated Insole than regular insoles.

ThermaCELL uses state of the art Thermal technology with a built-in thermostat in their heated insoles. The life of the insoles is approximately 2,500 hours of use, or about four winters worth of use, or at least 500 rechargings.. The recharge time is a quick four hours or less; the insoles must be fully charged before using, but you can then expect the battery life to be five hours of constant heat on medium; of course, the outdoor temperature and the insulation value of your boots will affect the battery life. To use your Heated Insoles, turn the insoles on by switching the little black slide button in the back of the heel to on. Then using your remote control, select the temperature by using the buttons as indicated; High (111º F), Medium (100º F), or No Heat. Insert your insoles into your boots. The insoles can be trimmed to fit your boots for the best fit and comfort.

• The insoles do not get hot to the touch like a disposable warming pad.
• They keep your feet warm, not hot.
• Use the insoles in a cold environment and with insulated boots for best results.
• Trim the insoles to fit properly into your boots.
• Make sure your boots are not too tight with the insertion of the insoles. When the blood flow is restricted to your feet, you feel the cold faster.
• Use the No Heat setting when you are engaged in strenuous activity. This will prolong the battery and keep your feet from sweating.

I used the insoles while hunting late season deer in Pennsylvania. During this late season you can experience all four seasons in a week, but generally we are below zero during this time. I usually did not turn the insoles to heat until I was situated in my stand, and I had a chance to cool off from the long walk. My favorite stand is almost a half mile hike from my home, and I chose to walk in rather than take the quad to avoid alerting the early browsing deer. I usually stay in the stand until well after lunch time, so I can take advantage of the other hunters going in for lunch, pushing the deer to me. Then I go back out for the last couple of hours. With five hours of continuous running on medium, I rarely have the batteries die on me. Keep in mind, at this time of year, we only have about nine hours of daylight. For earlier hunting seasons, I try to have a second pair of Heated Insoles available to change out at lunch time, or if I am staying out all day, I take a second pair with me to swap out when the battery dies. The first knife my parent’s bought me as a child was a Buck. When my children were young, I purchased them their first Buck knife, and again when my grandchildren were ready for their first knives. I hope to live long enough to carry on the tradition with my great grandchildren! Buck’s 420HC Stainless Steel that all of the Bantams use for their blades is the standard for Buck. The wear resistance nears the ability of high carbon, but is an easy blade to sharpen and retains the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. They harden their blades to a Rc 58 on the Rockwell scale.

The Bantams come in 4 different sizes. The Floating Walkies Talkies do indeed FLOAT! Reluctantly I tossed the walkie talkie into the canal, just to prove to myself that they do indeed float, and continue to work after becoming wet. The walkie talkie performed wonderfully! The bright color made it easy to spot floating on the water, and I am sure even if it had floated away from the kayak for a short distance, I would have spotted it easily. The bright orange color and the ability to stay atop the water make it virtually impossible to destroy or lose these!

Recently while in Florida, we took the double kayak out into the bay, the wind was quite choppy, and we had waves of about 1 foot. I took my walkie talkie, and left the other with my husband. We got buffeted by both the wind and waves, but were seeing manatees and sting rays, so I never even considered going in early. Well as having fun will do to you, time got away from us, and we were still a half a mile out at the time we had arranged to meet for dinner. Not a problem! I keyed up the walkie talkie and soon had Dale changing our reservation for a later time. This sounds so trivial, but it could have been an emergency that I was contacting him about, luckily we only needed contact for something simple.
