While attending the POMA Conference, I noticed some gun stocks that would make any gun personalized/customized very easily. I just had to check these out! With some help from the Boyd’s Gunstock Sales Department, I soon had the correct measurements and model information to order my very own thumb-hole laminate stock in the beautiful Sky blue color.

I ordered the gunstock to fit a Savage model 110 in 30.06 bolt action rifle that we had picked up for my grandson. The rifle was very used, but I love Savage and felt this would make a great starter rifle for Ryan. Blue is one of his favorite colors, and the customized rifle would be a great way to commemorate his hunting start. The gunstock arrived very quickly, and it was as beautiful as I remembered!  The thumb hole stock needed only some slight sanding to be able to fit the rifle. The complete installation only took thirty minutes or so. If you are uncomfortable doing this type of work on your own rifles, a qualified gunsmith would be able to assist you in this installation. Talk with your gunsmith about leaving your gunstock free-floating, or you can have it bedded.

The action of the rifle was still in perfect working order; this used and abused rifle got an immediate face lift with the custom gunstock, and it will be around for many years to come. Maybe someday Ryan will pass this rifle to his own children and include the story of how his Nanna gave it to him. Make your own family hunting heirlooms that the hunters in your family will love it!

Visit the Boyd’s Gunstocks website at https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/custom-options. There are many options to choose from including: woods, finishes, Laser Engraving, custom grips, tips, pads, length of pull, and adjustable comb. I opted for the Featherweight Thumb Hole Stock with the length of pull appropriate for Ryan, the 1/2″ recoil pad with Boyd’s logo, and of course, the Sky Blue Laminate. The MSRP of this particular gunstock is $129.00, but with all of the options available, your custom gunstock could vary in price. Ordering is done on the website at https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/, or you can contact their sales department at: Customers@boydsgunstocks.com or call them at 605-996-5011. When you contact them have your make, model, action, shape, and finish information available.

Camp Chef Cast Iron Square Dutch Oven

Not your traditional round Dutch Oven anymore!

I love cooking outdoors, and Camp Chef and cast iron have been a big part of that. Recently, I found that Camp Chef had come out with a 13″ Cast Iron Square Dutch Oven, and I had to have it!

Traditionally, Dutch Ovens have been round; some have legs, and you could cook indoors or out. Cooking with cast iron allows heat to distribute evenly, and it cooks your food perfectly. A well-seasoned cast iron cookware will last for generations and be non-stick. The Square Dutch Oven, obviously has bucked tradition to come up with a completely new design. This 13″ True Seasoned Finish Cast Iron Dutch Oven has a built-in thermometer notch and convenient loop handles on the lid. The lid can even reverse to be used as a grill or used upside down on the Dutch Oven to cook two items at once.  there are no legs on this oven, so you can use it in your home oven.  The Dutch Oven holds eight quarts enabling you to cook for your entire family!

At home we have big family meals. One such meal was our rolled caribou roast, which I cooked in the Square Dutch Oven for twelve people. I placed the seasoned rolled caribou roast with the onion soup mix and water in the Dutch Oven. I cooked this at 350° for about an hour. Then I added potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, onions, and Brussels sprouts; I cooked it for an additional forty-five minutes to an hour. Dinner was delicious!

While camping the Dutch Oven is my go to pot. I love baked apples done over a camp fire, and they are easy to make. I just core the apples, place camp chef Rolled-Caribou-Roast recipethem in the Dutch Oven along with sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar, and about one inch of water. Then I place the oven either in the coals or over a small fire. About forty-five minutes later you have a hot, wonderful dessert to enjoy! Don’t limit yourself to just one pot meals or desserts, you can cook breads, casseroles, and meats.

The True Seasoned Finish enables your Dutch Oven to be seasoned right out of the box. If you continue to care for your cast iron cookware you can easily pass it down to future generations to use and enjoy. The MSRP is $77.50, and considering how long you can expect the Dutch Oven to last, this is a bargain! You can buy this and many other cast iron cookware at http://www.campchef.com/cast-iron-cookware/cast-iron-square-dutch-oven.html. There is also a link to a Cast Iron Recipe Book that can be downloaded to your computer or printed off at http://www.campchef.com/media/manuals/CastIronRecipeBook.pdf, which also has a section on caring for your cast iron cookware.

Yukon Gear is a large portion of my hunting clothes. For 2015 they have come out with many new styles for women, including the Waylay Outer layer Pants and the matching Women’s 1/4 Zip Base layer top. Paired together, you have an attractive but functional hunting outfit.

“To waylay is to lie in wait and intercept unexpectedly”¹, and the  Yukon Gear Waylay Outer Layers give you the ability to do that in comfort. The Women’s Waylay Outer Layer Pants are made of a Poly Spandex, Knit blend that is windproof, water resistant and breathable. They are designed to fit a women’s body, and have generous pockets, including for hand warmers, cargo pockets and rear seat pockets. The removable suspenders use carabiners to attach to the pants, they are easy to attach, and if you lose one, you can replace them just about anywhere. The knee height zippers make getting in and out of your boots easy, and can be snapped shut for ventilation. For comfort in the cold weather, they have been fleece lined. Sizes are available from small to 2XL. They come in a Break-Up Country Camo and tan combination, accented with pink.

The Women’s 1/4 Zip Base Layer top is made of moisture wicking brushed polyester, and can be worn as either a base layer or on its own. It is designed to keep you dry and warm, has a welded sleeve pocket, perfect for your cell phone or hunting license. The sleeves sport thumb loops to do double duty keeping your hands warm and protected. The sizes range from small to 2XL and comes in a matching coloration to the Waylay Pants. The Break Up County Camo is paired with tan and is trimmed with pink.

I have been wearing the set for early archery. The cut and material moves well with you, without binding. I have been climbing treestands and busting through brush, with not restriction and no snagging. I also don’t hesitate to wear the 1/4 zip top with my jeans as a casual look, and get compliments when I do! During a recent squirrel hunt, my daughter borrowed my clothes, she is a smaller build then I am, and the pants and top fit her just fine. There is a Waylay jacket that would complete the outfit, that is on my list for next year!
