Mini Phantom Digital Call

15 11 2015

extreme dimension wildlife callsHave you ever been deer hunting, and heard the tell tale sound of a coyote in the distance? I have, and usually I have no way of calling that predator in close enough for a shot. Most times, having coyotes in the area means your deer hunt is over. Extreme Dimension Wildlife Calls makes a Mini Phantom Digital Call that is perfect for keeping in my pack, just waiting for those opportunities! The Mini Phantom is the smallest call in its class, and has many features only found in full size calls.

The Mini Phantom Digital Call is a hand held call that is not any bigger than a flashlight. Measuring approximately 5 1/2″ long, 2″ wide and 2 1/2′ deep this small call takes up a minimum of space while projecting a very large sound. The call operates on 3 AAA batteries, and the battery life is phenomenal! I inadvertently left the call on from my last hunt in deer season, and 2 months later the call still worked, partly due to the unit being smarter then me, and turning itself off after 2 minutes of inactivity. The on/off volume control dial takes the sound all the way to a 110 db of volume, which is amazing given the size of the unit. The speaker is forward facing, and a accessory Mini Phantom Speaker can be attached for remote calling using the 25′ attachment cord.

The call uses interchangeable sound sticks, that come in many different animal combinations; Bear, Elk, Gobbler, Moose, Moose 2, Predator, Pred 2, Pred 3, Predator Quest 1, Predator Quest 2, Snow Goose, Whitetail, Deer 2, Duck, and Crow. Each stick contains 5 different effective sounds and a mute button. You have the ability to play 2 sounds simultaneously.

I hunted for deer last season, while keeping the Mini Phantom in my backpack, just in case the opportunity arose to use it. As luck would have it, I was in a blind with my husband. We had been seeing deer all morning, when they just disappeared from sight. They had been feeding just out of range, so for them to just take off seemed odd. We heard yipping and a short yowl. I quickly pulled the call from my bag and hit the cottontail button. I played it for only a few seconds when a head was spotted in the distance. I hit the mute button, and the coyote made his way across the field. Dale wanted me to take the shot, but he was already with his slug gun. The coyote disappeared into a roll of the field, and we waited. As he cleared the roll in the field, Dale fired once at 124 yards and with a perfect shot dropped the coyote in his tracks. Now the best part! Since the coyote was no longer chasing game out of the field, I was able to take a good 9 point buck later in the same day! I have no doubt that having the Mini Phantom Call with me saved my deer hunt!

The MSRP of the Mini Phantom Digital Call is $44.99 and comes with 1 sound stick. The Interchangeable Sound Sticks are $19.99 each, and they can all be purchased at http://www.phantomcalls.com/Extreme-Dimension-Mini-Phantom-Series. Check the game laws for the state you are hunting in to determine if electronic calls are legal for the various game.

Arctic Radwear by Radians

15 11 2015

Everyone is affected by the heat at some point. On a recent trip to the Florida Keys, heat stroke was a real possibility. The new Arctic Radwear by Radians helped keep that possibility at bay.

The Radians Arctic Radwear Cooling Towel, Headshade, and Headband are made with Advanced ARCTIC™ Technology. This technology speeds the evaporation cooling process.  Using is simple: soak the band in water for 2 – 3 minutes and shake. This will provide cooling relief for up to five hours.  The patent pending stretch-fit spandex is designed to allow the band to move with your body. This provides a comfortable fit and allows for optimum blood circulation to help keep you cooler. All of the Arctic Radwear products are to be used during hot or strenuous outdoor activities: construction work, tough workouts, hunting, fishing, biking or hiking. The towel and the cooling pads on the Headband and Headshade are anti-microbial to prevent mold growth and unwanted smells. They are safe to use and reusable. The Headbands and Headshade come in several colors to coordinate with your clothing or activities. The Headband comes in Blue, Blue Paisley, Red Paisley, Camo, and High Visibility Lime. The Headshade comes in Blue, Blue Paisley, Red Paisley, and Camo. The Cooling Towel comes in Blue and High Visibility Lime.

My husband and I were down working on our boat and our friend’s home. Part of the time, we were replacing concrete block that had been damaged. As Dale proceeded to start laying the block, the sweat was already pouring off of his head. I quickly activated the Headband with water and had Dale start wearing it. It was easily noticeable that Dale no longer had sweat running into his eyes, and when I inquired about how hot he was, he replied “feeling good” with a smile. Later in the same trip, we were fishing out on the ocean, with no shade. I was wearing the Headshade, and at no point was I ever overheated. I also kept the Cooling Towel wet, and everyone was using it to wipe down their faces and even place it around their necks to increase the cooling effect. We were out on the water for four hours, and both the Headshade and Cooling Towel stayed cool to the touch the entire time! I also made use of the Arctic Radwear while we biked and walked the many hiking trails.

It seemed the more I used them, the more ways to use them I came up with. I will be taking them with me this summer when we go camping. I usually get uncomfortable from the hot summer weather, and not having any way to cool down our tent makes sleeping difficult. I think the Cooling Towel, either under my head, or on my torso will provide me with enough cooling effect that I can get a good nights sleep.

The MSRP of the Radian’s Arctic Radwear are: Cooling Towel $12.99, Headband $6.99 and the Headshade $12.99. These items can be purchased at most sporting goods shops and on Amazon. Team Realtree 20″ Three Section Backpack

15 11 2015

pathfinderAnyone who knows me, knows I don’t stay in one place too long. I am always on the go whether it is work, hunting, or fishing. I generally travel with my computer and iPad, as well as a few other office type items and of course my personal items. Typically this means I need to take both my briefcase and a backpack when flying as my carry-ons. On my recent trip to ATA in Indianapolis, I was introduced to a bag that will easily take the place of both of my carry-on bags: the 20″ Team Realtree Three Section Backpack by Pathfinder!

Photo: Diane Hassinger

The backpack has three very well thought out sections; however, with all of the compartments and pouches I would count it as much more than three! The padded laptop compartment is located closest to the body, which helps mitigate the weight of the laptop pulling away from your back. They have incorporated an audio pocket that is perfect for an iPod or in my case, my iPhone. There is also a tablet compartment, a key fob as well as water bottle pockets and a complete organizer for all your pens, business cards, cords, and any other accessories needed. The central pocket is very spacious, and even with the two outer compartments filled, I still had ample room for my clothing and toiletries needed for a night or two. The whole bag is supported on your back by the padded shoulder strap system. The exterior of the bag uses Realtree Camo in various color patterns; Snow Blue, Snow Pink, Max-1 Purple, Max-1 Green, Xtra Orange, Xtra Lime, and Xtra Turquoise. There are two exterior buckles that help hold everything you have packed together. The interior is lined with a hunter orange fabric which is perfect for any bag I would be carrying!

I could have given you how many cubic inches the bag holds, but if you are like me, that would not mean much to you. So, I unpacked my backpack and took a picture of what it held; a 17″ laptop, iPad, Nikon Camera, files, external hard drive, notebook, leather bound hunting journals, wallet, cords, ear phones, eye glasses, sun glasses, Sudoku book, business cards, flash drives, pens, iPhone, water, V8, quart sized bag of toiletries, Inhalers, Epi Pens, prescriptions, Tylenol, hairbrush, three shirts and under garments plus my keys! I could have easily added more to the backpack, but I didn’t need to! This held everything that my briefcase and old backpack did but with style. The most amazing part for me is that my 17″ laptop fit easily in the bag. I have a hard time finding even a briefcase that will hold it. This backpack has already flown carry-on to Las Vegas and Fort Lauderdale, did several road trips, and is showing no sign of wear and tear. I live so much of my life in camp that it is nice to bring it into my lifestyle too!

Do you have youth shooters that love to shoot, but hate the recoil? If you do, you will want to check out the ShockEater Shooting Shirts for Youth from Gamp Sports. These customizable shooting shirts are designed with a shooting pad pocket that holds a ShockEater Recoil Pad.

What’s that, You haven’t heard of ShockEater? It’s a fairly new company, which has developed a unique shooting pad that is only 1.4 ounces in weight, and a mere 8mm thick, while maintaining a 6 1/2 X 3 1/2 inch size. They have incorporated a proprietary Nano-Poly™ technology into the pads which reduces felt recoil without changing the length of pull or altering your appearance. These pads provide superior shock absorption, in a form that is lighter and thinner than any foam or gel can provide. The pads conform to you and your gun to provide “proper gun fit and improving pitch and toe angles at the butt-stock”¹ These pads can help with shooting recoil from the newest beginner, all the way to the most seasoned professional.
I played with a ball of ShockEater Nano-Poly technology, and it defied logic. Like the pads, with a sharp impact, like recoil, the molecules stiffen and lock together to form a solid state that maximizes the recoil absorption. After impact, these same molecules relax and return to a soft and conformable state, ready for the next shot, impact or recoil. Playing with this ball of Nano-Poly, it felt a good bit like play doh, but when the ball was struck on the table, it shattered because it was so stiff. I was then able to knead the ball back into a pliable state, over and over again!

The Shooting Shirts are available for either left or right hand shooters, in 36 color options. The sizes range from Youth Medium to Youth XL. If your youth shooter needs a larger size, there are both men’s and women’s sizes available also. All of the shirts are 6 ounce preshrunk, 100% cotton, unless you order the Safety Orange or Safety Green, then they come in the 50/50 cotton/polyester material. The breathable quilted pocket is sewn on the appropriate shoulder for your youth, and each shirt comes with a ShockEater Recoil Pad.

Sarah wore the ShockEater Youth Shooting Shirt on a recent day shooting clay pigeons. She does not like recoil, but even after several rounds of shooting, she was still ready for more! Sarah told me “The shooting shirt is comfortable, and did not hinder my range of movement. The recoil pad absorbed almost all of the recoil and made shooting a lot more enjoyable.” She now has ShockEater Recoil Pads in her Shooting Shirt and Miz Mac Shooting Vest.
You can find the ShockEater Youth Shooting Shirt Combo at http://gampsports.com/product/youth-shockeater-shooting-shirt-w-shooting-pad/, for the MSRP of $57.90. The ShockEater Recoil Pads can be purchased separately at http://gampsports.com/product/shockeater-recoil-pad/ for the MSRP of $34.95. Additional Shooting Shirts can be purchased separately for $24.95 at http://gampsports.com/product/youth-shockeater-shooting-shirts-100-cotton/. My family does a lot of shooting, both for fun and for practice. Usually we are sitting cans, clay pigeons, or even spoiled fruit on a 4X4. All of these make for great targets and fun, but sitting them on a board sometimes results in everything being knocked off with one shot.

The Right Now Range is a target system that is constructed of 100% heavy-duty cardboard. The two sections of the target are put together similar to a cardboard box, with interlocking sections. There are three shelves that are set up for holding clay pigeons, fruit, and hangers for pop cans. The bottom section has nine high quality bullseye targets, with a size perfect for everyone. There are several tabs that allow the target to be staked to the ground and help maintain stability. The entire system is easy to assemble and is reusable. Fully assembled, the unit measures 45″x48″x8″ and breaks down into a 24.5″x24.5″ for storage.

I set the target system up on a recent family day. We pulled out the .22 and plinked multiple targets. Hanging from their tabs, the pop cans held up great. The clay pigeons took several shots each before the clay would explode from the shot. Apples were fun but obviously messy. After several shots, the target was covered with applesauce! Other targets that would work well are ping-pong balls, oranges, lemons, or even old saucers from a thrift store. I think next time we will place a backstop behind the target system, and we will use our bows and shoot the apples with arrows.

We shot several hundred shells, with no real damage done to the target, other than the applesauce. When we finished, I wiped down the shelves, and put the entire unit in our garage to use another day. This target would be great for birthday parties or other family gatherings. With the multiple size of targets that could be used, there would be practice and fun for all levels of shooting.

How often has patching your favorite jacket been fun? With Gear Aid’s Tenacious Tape Tattoos, you can achieve a good strong patch and bring some fun to your coat. There are two patterns to choice from: Wildlife and Happy Camper.

The Tattoos are made using Tenacious Tape, which is an ultra-strong repair tape. These fun shaped tattoos can be used to patch clothing, luggage, boots, waders, tents, or other outdoor/indoor equipment. They can patch a tear in your favorite clothes, cover up the stain that you are unsure how it got there, patch your tent, or act as an abrasion patch. They can also be used to personalize anything from your favorite coffee mug to your cell phone case. These tattoos are different from ordinary stickers; they use ultra-aggressive adhesive that won’t peel or lift. The adhesive continues to strengthen over time. The Tenacious Tape Tattoos stay in place in all-weather conditions and environments. They will adhere to almost any surface, and with their clean-adhesive technology, they can be removed when needed, without leaving behind a sticky mess. Once the tattoos are in place, they are machine washable. To prep for using the tattoos, you need to clean the area with isopropyl alcohol.

The Wildlife package includes silhouettes of: wolf, bison, fish, buck, bear, eagle, and several tracks and leaves. The Happy Camper package includes: squirrel, moon and stars, pine tree, campfire, Sasquatch, tent, cloud and rain drops, and several leaves and acorns. Between the two packages, there can be so much creativity!

I have used the Tenacious Tape Tattoos on several different applications. I adorned my grandson’s cell phone case with a wolf to add his own personalization. My granddaughter’s back pack was also personalized with a buck’s head, and I patched a slight tear in my new rain coat with a bear. I have only had the raincoat for a couple of months, so I was glad to be able to patch and personalize at the same time. I also put bear tracks on my cell phone; hopefully, now I will not mistakenly pick up another cell phone that looks like mine! I have always used McNett products to patch my waders, but this year they will be getting a fresh new look with the fun designs that are offered. I also envision my grandson’s jeans sporting several of the shapes, to cover the wear and tear on his pants. I am going to have fun converting some worn items into useful products once again!

From phone cases, to backpacks to raingear, Tenacious Tape Tattoos can fix rips, tears and holes, or just add a bit of fun and personalization. Photo: Diane Hassinger

The Snake Chapz are made from 900 Denier Nylon and 18 oz. vinyl laminated polyester, which protects your youth from venomous snake bites, briars, and many other hazards they may encounter. The zipper is a number ten on the inside of each chap; this provides easy on and easy off for your child. When I am hunting, either my twelve-year-old granddaughter or my ten-year-old grandson will be only a few steps behind me. I am always alert to any possibility of them getting hurt or bit. Snakes can be one of those threats that you generally do not see until they are striking at you. Since it is hard to avoid hunting areas frequented by snakes, the only solution is to be prepared! My grandson, Ryan, wore the Youth Snake Chapz on a recent spring hunt. Not only did I feel confident that he was protected from snake bites, he was also able to push through the briars and thorns without being stuck and ripped by their sharp points. I can’t wait for our fall hunts; these chaps will also protect against burrs. There is nothing worse than coming in from your hunt, and finding that your outerwear is full of burrs, and generally they need to be removed one at a time. That shouldn’t be an issue this fall!

For more information go to http://crackshotcorp.com/. The MSRP of the Youth Snake Chapz is $75.95, and you can find a retailer at http://crackshotcorp.com/dealers.html.  Being protected is better than having to get medical attention, especially for your youth! Best of all-these are 100% made in the USA!

UST Duro 30 Day LED Lantern

The UST Duro 30 Day LED Lantern in GLO.is great for home and camping.
Photo: UST

When I received the Ultimate Survival Technologies (UST) Duro 30 Day LED Lantern, I was excited to be able to use it while camping this Summer and Fall. Never did I envision I would be using it much, much sooner.

The UST Duro 30 Day LED Lantern in GLO is a 300 lumen LED light that is water-resistant and can be left on for thirty days on low. The lifetime LED bulb is unbreakable and never needs changing. The light can be used as is on a table, the globe can be removed to provide forward area light, or the recessed hook on the base can be used to provide down light. At just 7.2” x 3.75”, you get a lot of light out of a small lantern, and it only takes three D batteries. The cool part is that the GLO actually glows in the dark, so you can find the lantern in an emergency.

Generally, I am prepared for most emergency situations, but when the power went out, and the temperature was fifteen below zero, I went into a bit of a panic! Thankfully I had already put batteries into the GLO Lantern, and with its ability to glow in the dark, it was only a matter of a few minutes before I had light on. Then I was able to focus on heat! How many times have you known you were ready for an emergency, but then during the suddenness of the situation, you can’t find your lantern because the house is already dark? No more!

Photo: Diane Hassinger

We camp several times a year. We generally rough it; we use a lot of kerosene lanterns, but the light is generally dim. The GLO is small enough to pack in tight spots, and the light it puts off is plenty bright enough to light the area you are in. We use it over our camp stove for cooking and on the camp table for the grand-kids to work on book work or to play cards. Later the GLO lights up our box trailer to illuminate our sleeping quarters. I haven’t had to use the light for a full thirty days, but I can attest to the lantern lasting for a week in the evenings and a bit in the early mornings on the same set of batteries.

The MSRP of the UST Duro 30 Day LED Lantern is $49.99 and can be purchased at http://www.ustbrands.com/product/30-day-led-lantern-glo/. You can get more information by watching the YouTube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW8gNWfwOjE

midwaymidway 2midway 3How many of you know that Midway USA has a foundation set up to help fund shooting sports in high schools, colleges, and other youth shooting teams? Every year Larry and Brenda Potterfield donate “to fund the purchase of promotional items for teams and our partners to use as fundraisers to grow their endowment accounts. The type and quantity of available promotional items varies, but they are always provided at no cost. We make an effort to acquire as many unique items as possible in order to maximize their value to the public. Our promotions are not only a great way to grow your endowment account, but can also provide current operating cash as well. Teams and partners may participate in multiple fundraising promotions each year and may conduct fundraisers any way they choose within local, state, and federal guidelines.”

There are over 2880 teams that have already enrolled in the endowment program. Not only are the school shooting programs able to enroll, but many of the club teams, such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, FFA, or those affiliated with your local gun club, are eligible. For more information on getting your program started with Midway USA Foundation, go to http://www.midwayusafoundation.org/start-your-account. The endowment funds make the earnings provided each year to the shooting teams. This allows the endowment to provide permanent funding and truly change the future.  Money is out there to help with the teams expenses. Currently there is a balance of $69,545,136 in the teams endowments. The average team endowment balance is $32,332. To date Midway USA Foundation has distributed over $6,766,472 to youth shooting sports

Matching funds are generally available, and your gift is tax-deductible and invested with the team of your choice. Thus, every dollar you raise for your shooting team, the Midway USA Foundation will match the funds you place in your endowment fund. These earnings are used to buy equipment needed or for other expenses. The matching deadline for 2015 is November 30th. More information on the Matching Program is available at http://www.midwayusafoundation.org/matching-program.

There are also grants available for up to 5% of your teams endowment fund. These grants can be applied for once a year. The grant deadlines are June 15 and December 15 for 2015. More information on these grants can be found at http://www.midwayusafoundation.org/grants.
