aquamira logoContaminated water can ruin a trip of a lifetime quickly! Whether you are enjoying the outdoors or traveling abroad, water contaminated with bacteria and other pathogens, is often your only source to drink. I often travel to remote areas that the water quality is questionable. While I try to have bottled water available, that isn’t always feasible. Aquamira, a division of McNett, has made it easy to find water treatment options for when you are out in the woods. I have 2 favorite products that I use when I need to know my water is safe from invisible culprits.

The Frontier Emergency Filter is a very light weight straw type filtration system that weighs in at only one ounce. This uses the torturous path method of water filtration. The filter traps over 99.9% of the harmful Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other pathogens, including waterborne insect larvae and many bacteria such as E. coli. There are only 2 parts to this BPA Free filter; the simple 6” long plastic straw and a 4” filter that use activated Coconut Shell Carbon to reduce the water-borne contaminants and remove offensive odors and tastes. The filter is treated with Miraguard Antimicrobial Technology that suppresses the bacteria growth within the filter media, which could include algae and molds.

I can tuck this simple filter into my daypack or backpack when hiking or hunting. You can simply use the straw to drink directly from your chosen water source. Since it can filter up to 30 gallons, this would be ample water supply for several days.

The other option I prefer is the Aquamira Water Bottle and Capsule Filter. Today most people grab a water bottle as they head out for the day. I grab mine also. But since mine is the Aquamira Water Bottle, I can rest assured that when in the need of a refill, I will be getting safe and delicious water, and not water borne illness!

Aquamira’s Water Bottle features a carry loop, and a strong Tritan dust cap with positive shut off to prevent leaks. The activated coconut shell carbon water filter will treat up to 100 gallons, and is treated with the Miraguard Antimicrobial Technology to suppress the growth of molds, fungus and bacteria in the filter. The filter removes over 99.9% of Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The water bottle is designed to be comfortable in your hand, and to fit in bicycle cages, and has a Bite Me Valve to keep the water in the bottle until you need it.

I keep my water bottle attached to my hunting backpack using a carabiner. I am able to have clean, safe water anytime and place I need it. During some of our more remote hunts, this bottle has made the difference in having enough to drink, while not becoming sick. My husband and I used these during a caribou hunt in Northern Quebec. We were trekking an average of 12 miles a day. I was not able to carry enough water with me, so the Aquamira Water Bottle made it possible for me not to become dehydrated, and I was able to keep the weight to a minimum. Water is plentiful there, just questionable. I would fill up my bottle at every water crossing, being able to drink my fill and quench my thirst made the hunt easier on my body. Between the water filter and the ever-present blueberries, I took care of both of my body’s needs easily; eating and drinking.

The MSRP on the Frontier Emergency Filter is $19.95 and $29.95 for the Water Bottle & Capsule Filter, a small price to pay for peace of mind. Both of these filters can be purchased at Don’t let contaminated water ruin your trip!
