Breast Cancer-Round 2

19 02 2014

breast cancer collageBreast Cancer affects about 1 in 8 women at some point in their lives. Anyone who follows my life, knows that 4 1/2 years ago I underwent a bilateral mastectomy due to breast cancer. Since that time I have been open about my battle, and recently my battle was the focus of an episode of Yeti’s Ultimate Hunt TV Show, which ironically airs again tomorrow night at 10:30 on the Sportsman’s Channel. Because of my openness, I have received so many positive and heartwarming messages, many of which are from women (and men) who are going through treatment currently.
In late December I discovered another lump, which turned out to be breast cancer once again. I found this due to self examination, and the Doctor’s have stated that my mammogram didn’t even detect it, it was that small. Today I will be undergoing a “partial mastectomy” aka lumpectomy and Lymposcintigraph (sentinel lymph node mapping). Due to this being a localized recurrence, I will undergo 6 to 6 1/2 weeks of radiation. I am sure this will slow me down somewhat. But I am not looking to be down for long! PLEASE do not ignore your body, do self examinations often, talk to your Doctors, follow up ASAP, schedule your annual mammograms when indicated by your Doctor. Pay attention, and do not be afraid to talk to others. Breast Cancer caught early needs only to be a speed bump in your life.
After this small speed bump, I have full intentions of being out bear hunting this spring, of course with my Tenpoint Crossbow, and Victory Archery Pink Arrow Project bolts. I will continue to support Breast Cancer Awareness programs, and use products that donate to the search for a cure.
We are all in this together! I hope everyone realizes that cancer can be just a hiccup in your life. Keep your spirits up, maintain a positive outlook, lean on people when you need support, cry on someone’s shoulder when the stress gets to be too much. But PLEASE never ever give up. Life is to precious to waste a minute of it. As always “Love the life you live, Live the Life you Love”! (Bob Marley)

Neverlost Ipad Pouch

19 02 2014

neverlost_logoNeverlost has an entire line of hunting and outdoor gear that is predominately orange and black, to make you most visible to other hunters, and others in your party.  The bright orange also makes it easier to locate your Items when you set them down or drop them in the outdoors.

You can access all your information while your iPad is in the NeverLost pouch.

I was presented an iPad waterproof pouch at the 2013 SHOT Show.  The style of this product is completely different than of the styles currently available on the market. This pouch sports an internal earphone attachment that allows you to listen to your music while maintaining a silent space around you. With the earphone attachment being internal, the pouch maintains its waterproof ability while you have easy access to all of the information on it.

This pouch is extremely sensitive for the touch screen, and weighs very little, it is made of 420D Nylon and is very durable. I used this product recently while in Alabama. With predictions of tornadoes moving into the area, we were dealing with terrible weather.

Normally I would not take my iPad into a tree stand with me but I wanted to see how effective the pouch would be in extreme situations. I do a lot of work on my iPad, so I was concerned! If I were to lose my iPad or even the data contained in it, it would be a terrible set back. I deliberately left the pouch exposed to the elements, while I tried to dodge the rain myself. It performed exactly as described-waterproof. Whew! Now if only my rain gear had been waterproof, I was wishing I had a Neverlost pouch big enough for me to fit in!

Next, I summoned up my courage to place my iPad, protected only by the pouch, into the creek. I am very pleased to tell you, I am typing this review on that same iPad! I wouldn’t recommend taking your electronics for a swim or using them for diving toys, but you could get soaked in the rain with no ill effects. This pouch will not protect your gear from falls, so you still need to handle your electronics with care. This is a new item for 2013, and can be purchased at http://www.opticsplanet.com/neverlost-ipad-tablet-waterproof-pouch.html?

The MSRP is an affordable $69.99, making it easy to keep your expensive tablets safe from the elements.  See the entire line of NeverLost products at http://www.neverlostgear.com/

Redring Shotgun Sight

19 02 2014

redring logoDuring the Shot Show Media Day at the Range I had the chance to shoot clay pigeons with the Redring Shotgun Sight. It was set up on a 12 gauge double barrel shotgun, and looked more like a rifle scope than any shotgun sight I had ever used. I was instructed to keep both eyes open, which is tough for me to do since I have been shooting right eye dominant for 40 years.

shot show 020

The Redring Shotgun Sight mounted on a shotgun simulator at the Shot Show. Note the red ring visible in the sight.
Photo: Diane Hassinger

As the first clay left the thrower, I immediately noticed how easy it was to acquire your target in the sight. I fired and the first clay was dusted. I expressed my thought that the target actually seemed to be clearer then with the naked eye. It was explained to me that the Redring Optical Shotgun Sight, developed in Sweden, has a light measurement system that adapts to the background. So I was right, it was clearer and more defined with the sight.

I called “Pull”; again the clay was blasted into small pieces. I repeated the process with the same results. Just to test the sight and the gun, I called “Pull” once more and shot with my left eye closed, I wasn’t surprised when I missed, but I wanted to make sure.

Keep both eyes open!
Photo: Diane Hassinger

Many aspects of this sight did impress me; I was shooting an unknown gun, I hadn’t sighted in the scope myself, I had never used an optical scope on a shotgun and I NEVER keep both eyes open and yet here I was shooting like a pro!

I have used the sight since then on my own shotguns and the installation was easy. The sight will fit on any shotgun with a vent rib with various spacers included; so moving from one shotgun to another can be accomplished in just a couple of minutes.

Redring 012

Very stylish with great function!
Photo: Diane Hassinger

Using the Redring has improved my shooting average by about 15%. After forgetting about keeping both eyes open a few times, and of course-missing, it is now an automatic reflex when shooting to keep both eyes open. There are also a couple of factors that help with improving shooting accuracy which are the Target Distance Indicator and the Spot Metering which reads the back-light and automatically adjust the intensity of the ring.  Both help with the ranging and acquiring of your targets. You won’t realize that all of this is happening, you will just know you are are shooting better.

When you handle the sight, you can tell it is good quality. They have used Anodized Aluminum for the main body, yet the unit weighs under 6 ounces. The auto shut off also insures I don’t have dead batteries the next time I pick up my shotgun. They offer a 5 year warranty on manufacturing defects.

This Redring Shotgun Sight works in all shotgunning applications; wing shooting, turkey/deer hunting, and skeet/clays. Turkey season will soon be upon us, and I will be taking the Redring into the field! Try one out today, and you will see for yourself why Field and Stream named the Redring Optical Shotgun Sight the “Best Sight of 2013.” http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2013/07/16-redring-optical-shotgun-sight.

Pass on the Heritage with Hunter Hills Journals

19 02 2014

Hunter HillsIn my spare time I enjoy doing ancestry research. I love when I can find one of my ancestor’s handwritten journals. Some of these journals could be a hundred years old or older, and they contain a wealth of information that you cannot find anywhere else. With that in mind, Hunter Hills has a complete line of Sportsman’s Journals. All of these are handmade, formatted and leather bound and maintain a quaint look of the past. These give you a unique place to keep your hunting legacy alive for your grandchildren/great grandchildren and so on.

Whether you are a hunter, fisherman, or just like to keep a journal of your day, there is a Hunter Hills Journal made just for you. They have created formatted pages to help you keep track of your hunts and harvests, hunt specifics, personal information, notes, addresses, maps and pictures. They are customized for; Big Game, Fishing, Whitetail, Fly Fishing, Waterfowl, African Hunts, Upland Birds and Saltwater as well as a general Journal. They also can be personalized with your name laser cut into the leather and the title page can have your name or logo imprinted.

Details of my hunts were easy to record.

I won my first Journal, and since that time I have purchased several as gifts and for myself. Recently I hunted South Africa for 2 weeks, and my African Journal went with me. The African field journal is a compact 4” X 7” with 110 formatted pages with a MSRP of $30; while the African Camp Journal is 5 ½” X 7” with 200 formatted pages and has an MSRP of $40. The African Lodge Journal measures 5 ½” x 7” with 220 total pages; 120 formatted pages and 100 photo sleeves and has an MSRP of $50 and $65 with photo tabs. I used the Lodge Journal so that I can keep pictures of my hunts right with the stories, and protected with the photo sleeves.

I updated it each day, because of that, my family can enjoy my experiences for many, many years to come. I keep a separate journal for the hunting I do local to North America and another for my Saltwater Fishing. Even with these trips being recent, my grandchildren love to flip through the pages and read the stories that go with each picture. It is not hard to imagine what type of reaction my great grandchildren will experience reading about my adventures. These are destined to become family treasures!

Mineral Mizer Bags for your Wildlife

19 02 2014

mineral mizer logoMineral Mizer Bag makes a unique delivery system for keeping essential minerals available at all time for deer, bear, hogs and many other animals. These bags come pre-filled with 6 pounds of the granulated mineral blends, blended specifically for different parts of the country or animals targeted. The bags are extremely simple to use.

The moisture activated mineral filtration bag can be hung using the attached lanyard from any tree near the area you want to target. Wet down the bag with water to activate and let it hang; the humidity in the air and rainfall keeps the minerals flowing. One bag can last up to a year depending on your climate.  Refills for the bags are available at a very economical price. These are very different from mineral blocks you place on the ground in that they last a long time, plus when the deer are trying to lick directly from the bag you can get great photos via a trail camera.

Wild Buck Persimmon Mineral Blend

Wild Buck Persimmon Mineral Blend

Mineral Mizer Bags come in Wild Buck Persimmon Mineral Blend, Acorn Mineral Blend, Apple Mineral Blend, and Bad Boarz Mineral Blend. These are scientifically formulated to provide key nutrients to bucks during antler development. The minerals also help lactating does and their fawns. I used the Persimmon in Georgia for bear, hogs and deer. You would have thought I rang a dinner bell, within hours they wild game was utilizing the bag. In Pennsylvania, I have been using the Acorn Blend for deer, although I think they would like the Persimmon and Apple also, even though we do not have persimmons here.

In Georgia, I had bear and hogs almost from the first moment I hung the bags. The area that collected the dripping minerals stayed plowed up by their rooting. The big boars seemed to really like these areas; utilizing the area often. The only thing that could make this product better is if they could make nocturnal animals feed during the day. I let a lot of does and young deer walk, since I wasn’t targeting them, but the big boys came in after legal shooting light–sometimes by only minutes.

You can see the Mineral Mizer bag hanging in the tree on the right. Photo: Diane Hassinger

The Pennsylvania deer reacted similarly. I had hundreds of pictures from the first night I hung the bags. Rabbits were also drawn in by the minerals, and I  realized we have many more rabbits then I had previously thought. These minerals will work for most of the wildlife. I had numerous whitetails crowding in to get their taste of the blends. Sometimes a lot of pushing and shoving took place. The area I hung these bags in is an area I try to keep as a safe haven for does and young deer; I don’t hunt this area.

Soon it will be time to get some new Mineral Mizer Bags hung and I am eying up many new locations! These bags can be purchased at https://mineralmizer.com/products-list with the MSRP of the prefilled Mineral Mizer Bags of $20.99 and the refill package of 6 pounds of blends for a MSRP of $12.99. When you weigh the cost against the life of the product, this is a very economical way to use minerals to draw in the animals.

The Crush Bag Target by Morrell

19 02 2014

morrell logoAs a breast cancer survivor of 4 ½-years, I try to patronize as many products as possible that donate to the fight against breast cancer. Morrell has designed The Crush bag target with that in mind; as a portion of the proceeds go toward the fight against this terrible cancer that targets many more women than men. This is a target designed for females that makes a huge difference!

The Crush Archery Bag Target that donates a portion of sales to the fight against breast cancer!

The Crush Archery Bag Target that donates a portion of sales to the fight against breast cancer!

The Crush bag target is a signature Tiffany Lakosky target and is eye-popping pink for breast cancer; which also adds to high visibility during target practice. This two-sided target is 24” by 24” by 12” thick, 100% waterproof and features the Internal Frame System. The field-point only bag is filled with Morrell’s patented Multi-Layered Density Design. The E-Z Tote carrying handle makes the bag very portable for anyone wanting to practice their archery skills.

Both sides of the bag feature five different bullseye targets; the larger centered one in the middle, and four smaller ones circling the outside. There are also twelve deer tracks that I am sure will be used as targets when we have a friendly competition going on. Proudly featured is the universal pink ribbon for breast cancer.

During a winter afternoon, I carried the target out into the snow for some much needed practice with our field tips. The bag stood straight without any external frame or support. All of the arrows shot into it, were stopped within a few inches of penetration and were easily pulled out. That feature is extremely important to me, as I do not have the normal pulling muscles left after the surgeries for my breast cancer, but there I was pulling each and every one out without a struggle. I, of course, was shooting Victory Archery Pink Arrow Project arrows. They donate a portion of their sales toward breast cancer also. I felt like I was making a difference while having fun.

Before long, I was shooting against my granddaughter, and we were both making life long memories and having fun together. Ginger is only in her second year of shooting a compound bow, while I have 30 years of experience. We both were challenged by the target, with me taking the more difficult shots, and her using the larger and easier shots. A fun shooting target like this makes practice even more enjoyable. A beautiful afternoon’s memories were made possible by archery and The Crush Bag Target.

The MSRP of this target is $69.99, but considering that this is an X-Tended Life Target and the fact you can buy a replacement bag cover for only $25.99, this is an extremely reasonable way to practice your shots, help with the fight against breast cancer and spend time with your loved ones! More information can be found at http://morrelltargets.com/products/23/the-crush-field-point-target/.  Find a local dealer for these targets at http://morrelltargets.com/dealers/.

Grapple your Gear with Gear Grappler

19 02 2014

gear grappler logoDo you get frustrated when you drop items out of your tree stand? I know I do. I admit to being clumsy.

Gear Grappler by Simpson Outdoors

Gear Grappler by Simpson Outdoors

If you tend to drop items from your stand then this item is for you. The Gear Grappler by Simpson Outdoors is a multi-function hunting and tree stand accessory.

You will not believe what they have managed to fit into this small compact unit, that weighs only 7 ounces. Let’s start with the 30 foot 550 paracord rope. Paracord is used for many things out in the woods including; pull up rope for your gun/bow/pack, clothesline, tie stuff to your pack, tie up a tarp for emergency shelter, use to make a splint or a sling, use as a tourniquet or a multitude of other things.

Couple it with the 4 1/2″ long, 1 1/2″ wide, nylon Gear Grappler and you can pull up dropped items with ease. The Grappler has 3 stainless steel grappling hooks that rotate individually into multiple positions, including folding flat for easy storage. There are also three rare earth magnets embedded into the sides of the unit, rated to lift 3.3 pounds, and a larger rare earth magnet on the bottom of the unit that can lift 5.5 pounds. No more having to climb down to retrieve your dropped arrows, knives, saws and calls. Use the grappling hooks to snare your dropped gloves, hats, quivers or even just leave your backpack on the ground for retrieval later. Do you have one limb that is in your way, and you just can’t reach it? Throw the Grappler over it to pull it out of the line of view. Tie the paracord around your tree to have an instant access hanger for your bow or pack.

There is still more! Inside the Gear Grappler is waterproof storage that contains strike anywhere matches and cotton balls. Use this to start a fire or toss a small bit of the cotton to determine wind direction. You could also remove the matches that are included and use as a dry storage for something of your own choosing.

My backpack was easy to latch onto to, and lifted just as easily! Photo: Diane Hassinger

My backpack was easy to latch onto to, and lifted just as easily!
Photo: Diane Hassinger

When I crawled up into my tree stand, I attached my gun to the rope and pulled it up after I was settled. I had deliberately left my backpack on the ground to see how hard it would be to snag and lift it. It took me only a moment to catch the strap and have my pack lifting off the ground. Of course I dropped my glove a couple of times, and a knife, on purpose just to play. It almost felt like a fishing game. Okay, time to get serious. I tied the cord around the tree and opened up one of the hooks to hang my back pack. I need to get back to hunting, that is the only way I can try using it as a deer drag too.

You can get more information and purchase your own Gear Grappler at http://www.geargrappler.com/purchase-the-gear-grappler.html. With a MSRP of $29.99 this multi-tool can be in everyone’s hunting pack and with some thought, you could find even more uses. Did I tell you, this product is “Proudly Made in the USA.”

Archer’s Hard Surface Practice Hanger

19 02 2014

hme-products-logohme archers har surface practice hangerMaking good ethical shots when hunting is very important to everyone in my family. Therefore, we practice shooting year round. During the winter it is difficult enough to go outside to shoot our bows, without having to fight the snow when we lay them down. HME Products has a great solution for that problem. They make the Archer’s Hard Surface Practice Hanger.

Assembly of the Practice Hanger takes only minutes and requires only a tool to tighten a 16 nuts and bolts; I used a ratchet driver with a 11 mm socket for this. The entire hanger is durably powder coated in an olive color and made to last. With a hanger on each side, you can easily hang 2 bows and hold 12 arrows.

The arrows are held in rings, that are easily adjusted for height, using a thumb screw; in the photos for this review I simply pushed the rings out-of-the-way since I did not use them. The bow hanger itself is adjustable to accommodate everything from the older, longer bows to today’s more compact compound bows.

I put this together in my house, the assembly was not difficult, but as with any project, read the entire directions before you start. Long before it ever made it outside, it was holding bows. As I moved it outside into the snow, I was slightly worried about it not being stable on the frozen ground. Happily, I can say there was no problem.

The Practice Hanger remained stable, even in 3 inches of snow, with 2 different size bows.Photo: Diane Hassinger

The Practice Hanger remained stable, even in 3 inches of snow, with 2 different size bows.
Photo: Diane Hassinger

With the raised leg design, the hanger was very stable on the uneven surface. Normally, when we shoot, the bows are laid flat on the ground. Obviously this is not a good choice. Many times I have had to remove leaves or twigs from the cams, or clean my sight from the dust and dirt. This Practice Hanger made our shooting more enjoyable, the bows were ready to go when we were. With two of us shooting, the hanger was holding one or two bows at all times, it remained stable even when the weight was all on one side. I even was able to hang my range finder on this stand, keeping it close at hand but completely out-of-the-way.

I tried this hanger out with my crossbow too. Anyone who has ever shot a crossbow, knows they weigh considerably more than a compound bow. Even with my crossbow on one side, and my compound on the other, the Practice Hanger stayed stable. That fact alone makes this hanger so much more versatile.

My crossbow fits perfectly on this hanger also! Photo: Diane Hassinger

My crossbow fits perfectly on this hanger also!
Photo: Diane Hassinger

When done shooting, the Practice Hanger once again took up residence in my home, holding a couple of our bows till we are ready to shoot again. I loved the ability to go from indoor to outdoor, and back again, without any modifications. Now I just need enough of these hangers to hold all of our bows!

The MSRP of this unit is $34.99 and is available for purchase at many of the larger, well-known sporting goods shops and at Amazon.com.

Yukon Cold Lockers

19 02 2014

yukon logo winter

When Igloo came out with their new line of Yukon Cold Lockers, they made three promises to their customers; Out Haul, Outlast and Out Chill.

Yukon® “Outhauls” by offering a true capacity in their cold lockers. They use the measurements from the inside where it counts, the Yukon 70 will actually hold a full 70 quarts. They have solid handles that are formed right onto the cooler body, no more attached handles that can break away after time. The drain plug is tethered to the oversize drain enabling quick clean ups and no more lost plugs.

With a 5 year warranty, roto-molded construction and UV inhibitors, the Yukon is able to “Outlast.” They have also installed bigger, stronger hinges with stainless steel pins. One feature I really appreciate is the hinge holds the lid open so that you can use both hands placing items inside. The dual durable latches are animal proof and incorporate a T-handle for ease of opening.

They make it possible to “Out Chill” by using thicker insulation in both the body and lid, and a full gasket, like those used in refrigeration. Igloo has also used reversible skid/ non-skid feet to keep the locker elevated above hot surfaces, allowing air flow around the entire cooler. Use the skid side out when moving or unloading, and the non-skid side out when you want it to stay in place like on a boat deck.

Ladies in Camo staff accepted the honor of Yukon Cold Locker Pro-Staff because we believe in this cooler. Igloo has long been a name to trust for 67 years. Our experiences have varied, due to the different environments and situations where we have used these coolers. One fact stays constant; Yukon delivers on their promises. These cold lockers come in various sizes from 50 to 250 quarts, with the MSRP of the Yukon 70 being $389.99. You can purchase your own at http://www.igloo-store.com/detail/IGL+YUKON+70 or at many retailers across the country.

Diane’s Yukon has been on the go; gator hunts in the heat of Florida, salmon fishing in the cold of New York, deer hunting in frozen Illinois, sailing, picnicking, camping and hog hunts. While I have not had the opportunity to try out the “keep cold for 7 days”, I have had my cooler stay cold for 5 days without replacing the ice while we were camping. This was our only refrigeration, and even though the temperature reached the high 60′s during the day, we never had a loss of coldness. I dumped out ice when we returned home. All of our friends and family now want to borrow my cooler and have had experienced similar results. I definitely need to add another Yukon in a much larger size! ~Diane H

Michelle’s Igloo’s Yukon cold locker has gone with her on her hunting trips, whether it’s down the street or across the country. “I trust Yukon to keep my game meat cold until I get home. On a two-day drive from Florida to New York, my Yukon kept hog meat and over 30 pounds of alligator tail frozen. The Yukon is built better than any cooler out there and will out haul, out last and out chill it’s competitors. If you need a cooler that can keep up with you, take the Yukon challenge at yukoncoldlockers.com and you will see who the clear winner is.  From Alligators to bear to bow fishing tournaments, my Yukon is with me for whatever I can throw at it.” ~Michelle H

Absolutely the best ice chest I have ever owned!
Photo: Jeanne Peebles

Jeanne feels these are “Absolutely the best ice chest I have ever owned!” Being on the Gulf Coast we use our ice chests daily and to have one that does not require filling with ice daily is a dream! Our Yukon goes everywhere with us. Fishing, hunting, vacation or just in the back of the truck filled with cold drinks. Previously we would have to fill our ice chest daily. With the Yukon we can go up to 10 days without refilling!” ~Jeanne P

Nancy Jo also counts on her Yukon. “You can find my Yukon Cold Locker with me on every hunting trip; it is just as important as loading my weapon for the hunt. The reason I choose Yukon is a no-brainer….it keeps ice rock solid for the entire hunting trip. I can depend on Yukon to not only keep ice longer and my food/drink cold but also to keep game harvest cold until processed—no worry of spoiling or bacteria ruining the meat. Yukon is always on my gear list because I can count on it.” ~Nancy Jo A

Lifeline by Hunter Safety Systems

Do you know someone who has suffered a fall from a tree stand? Unfortunately, I do. His fall was not the fault of not wearing a harness, but rather from the transition from the lock on to the climbing sticks. Had he still been attached to the tree he would not have suffered such extreme injuries. Hunter Safety Systems Lifeline could have prevented his fall. Statistics show that the most dangerous period for falls from a tree stand is when the hunter is climbing in or out of the stand.

The Lifeline is a heavy duty rope that ties off to the tree above the stand and extends to where it is tied off near the base of the tree. All Lifelines accommodate tree stands up to 30 feet high. The Prussic knot enables the user to be attached to the Lifeline by the harness tether strap and the supplied climbing carabiner.

The user slides the knot up the tree as they climb the ladder keeping them safe from a fall. No more worries when you move from the ladder to the stand, or while you attach your tree strap. The Lifeline can be left attached to the tree for the entire hunting season, but should be check every 2 weeks for signs of deterioration or damage by rodents.

I used the Lifeline in conjunction with my Hunter Safety System Lady Pro Series Safety Harness the entire archery season. It took only a couple of minutes to install; really about the same amount of time it takes to install a tree strap. Every time I used the Lifeline, I felt confident and safe.

At one point during archery season, I experienced an incident that made me truly feel that I had taken my safety for granted while hunting in Illinois. I had forgotten the Lifeline, not a big deal, since I still had my tree strap with me. As I climbed up that first morning, it was noticeable that I was not as comfortable as when I was attached to the Lifeline.

The rest of the day, I forgot about the line; that is until I went to climb down! My upper body strength is impaired due to surgeries for breast cancer, and I do have an issue pulling myself up and letting myself down out of a tree. Again, I was noticeably uncomfortable stepping off of the stand onto the climbing sticks. I will be doing my best NOT to forget my Lifeline ever again!

The HSS Lifeline does several important things: keeps you safe from falls, simplifies your set up in the stand each day, and gives you peace at mind that you may not even realize until it is not there!

HSS Lifelines can be purchased directly from HSS at http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/lifeline/, or can be found at many of the larger sporting goods shops across the country. For the MSRP of only $39.95, put one in each of your stands.  After all, what is your life or quality of life worth? Stay Safe!
