For the last 4 years, I have always had a Pink Arrow Project arrow or bolt in my quiver. As a survivor of breast cancer it is a subtle reminder that I am lucky to be able to be here, and even more lucky to be able to continue to hunt. Some of my greatest trophies have been taken using these quality arrows and bolts. I like to have confidence in my equipment, and Victory Archery keeps me confident that my arrows will not let me down.

Since the breast cancer, I use mainly my crossbow to hunt with. I have used the Pink X-Bolt bolts for everything from turkey hunting to bear hunting, and everything in between. The past 2 years I have taken large black bears using my crossbow and the Pink X-Bolts. Both bears were shot in close range, and traveled less then 20 yards before collapsing to the ground. The X-Bolts passed right through the huge chest cavities and lodged in the ground on the other side. Neither bolt showed any type of breakdown of the carbon fibers. In fact the same bolt was used on both bears. Amazingly I used the same bolt one more time this Fall during deer season. I shot my biggest doe yet, at 200 pounds. She was shot at 15 yards, with a pass through, and again I was able to locate my bolt in the undergrowth, partly due to the pink coloration, which makes it easy to find. I am confident I can use this bolt next year on my hunting excursions.

If you are looking for a good quality carbon arrow or bolt, Victory Archery has the right one for you, whether you are hunting or target shooting. The prices make it affordable to put “Pink” into everyone’s quiver; The VAP/VForce pink shafts fletched per dozen are $129.99, VAP/VForce pink shafts fletched 6 pack are $69.99, VAP/VForce pink shafts per dozen are $119.99 and pink Xbolts fletched 6 pack are $44.99.

Victory Archery makes it easy to find a local dealer; http://www.victoryarchery.com/carbon-arrow/dealers/.  The arrows and bolts are also available at Bass Pro Shops, Dick’s Sporting Goods, HerCamoShop and many other archery retailers.

Harmon Scents by Cass Creek makes Sense

Triple Heat Scent Stick, Female in Heat Spray and Death Mist
Photo: Diane Hassinger

Everyone knows that a deer’s sense of smell is much more fine tuned than ours.  Trying to trick that sensitive nose is sometimes a recipe for disaster, but not this year. As whitetail deer season rolled around with everyone is trying to figure out what lure scents and cover scents would work the best for them, I chose Harmon Scents by Cass Creek. Cass Creek makes a complete line of products designed to help you bring in your buck.

In the Harmon Triple Heat line, I used the Female in Heat spray, Death Mist and Scent Stick. All of these scents use a combination of the estrus urine of several does to create a natural and alluring blending of the scents to tempt any nearby bucks. The Female in Heat spray comes in a 2 ounce spray bottle. I used it to spray onto the ground, brush, leaves, on a wick and on a drag.  The scent is derived from at least 3 different does in estrus; sure to make your big buck think he is hot on the trail. The MSRP of the Female in Heat spray is $9.99.

Death Mist is an aerosol spray can containing 6 ounces of the strongest combination of the urine of at least 3 does in estrus. This can be utilized by spraying brush, grass, scrapes and even into the air. Just watch that you spray the mist downwind from you, this is very important! It suffices to say that the wind wrecked havoc with me one day, swirling and turning, causing the mist to swirl right back onto me. I can attest that this tastes terrible to a human, but really turns on the bucks!

Also if you happen to get the mist on your cell phone, use a hunting scent eliminator and baking soda to remove the smell, or you will get some strange looks in public; I found out the hard way. Keep this and all scents away from children, they are not made to be ingested, and keep away from your eyes. Although, I suffered no long term effects from my accidental exposure, just really terrible breath and needing a shower bad when I got home. The Death Mist comes in a 3 pack with a MSRP of $20.

The Triple Heat Scent Stick is also the combination of the urine of at least 3 does in estrus. This product will not leak or spill. You can apply it by rubbing onto limbs or rocks or you can shave small sections onto a trail.  The MSRP of the Triple Heat Scent Stick is $11.99 and is a great value because it does not dissipate as quickly as liquids and of course, you will not have issues with wind swirls. I used the Triple Heat Stick on several trees and logs. Since the product leaves a milky looking waxy stripe on them, I was able to use this to help mark my yardage; a really nice unintended benefit.

The first week that I used these attractants in Pennsylvania, I had over 1200 pictures on one game camera alone. Generally, I have only does and young bucks showing up at that time of year; this time I had several bucks. Those bucks have stayed in the area since early October. I am also getting some transient bucks who are making their way to check out the Triple Heat.

Ladies in Camo hosted an archery rut hunt in Illinois and Harmon Scents were passed out to the hunters who attended.  Every one saw trophy bucks and by the end of the hunt 3 hunters had harvested 2 bucks and a huge doe over the scents. The doe was walking out on a trail to the feeding area when she stopped to sniff the Triple Heat Death Mist to figure out her competition. That was all of the opportunity I needed! Because of the Death Mist, I have a 200 pound doe to put into the freezer! One huntress had never shot a buck before. When he stopped to check out the Harmon Scent doe urine, the huntress was able to harvest her first antlered deer.

9 point buck that just had to investigate the Triple Heat!

Recently I was hunting the Illinois 2nd firearm season, and had several buck come into my wicks coated with Triple Heat. Finally as the season was winding down, I had a nice wide 9 point “stop and smell the roses” or rather the Triple Heat! He had positioned himself broadside to me, and stayed that way for several minutes!  A well placed shot from my slug gun, and this buck will help feed my family all winter long. The scents kept his attention to give me a few minutes to determine his size, and place my shot.

I still have several weeks of hunting left before our season ends, you can be sure Harmon’s Triple Heat will be going with me! The cost is reasonable and it produces!

You can purchase all of the Harmon line of scents at http://www.casscreek.com/Harmon-Scents, and at many sporting goods shops located around the country.

The Best Buddy for a Crossbow; The XBow Buddy Sling

14 12 2013

The X-Bow Buddy Sling by H & M Archery

If you hunt with a crossbow, you probably love hunting with it, but wish there was an easier way to carry it to the stand or during a spot and stalk situation. X-Bow Buddy Sling by H & M Archery takes care of that problem.

cross bow buddy sling

The X-Bow Buddy Sling allows you to hold your bow in the ready position rather than on your back. The unique design works whether you are walking, standing or even sitting in a stand or blind. This enables you to use your hands freely, while doing away with any fear of your crossbow falling. The weight of the crossbow is also transferred to your shoulder rather than your arms, leaving your arms fresh when the shot opportunity comes.

The X-Bow Buddy Sling has a tubular fiberglass rod covered in nylon webbing strap that is attached to a metal rod installed on a bracket on the foot stirrup. The strap is elevated above the front of your crossbow high enough for it to clear the scope, and conveniently stays out-of-the-way of your shot. The assembly is very simple, you just need a wrench to tighten 4 nuts, adjust the strap to your shoulder and you are ready to go. The strap is removable for storage and travel in a case by loosening one knurled nut. The entire unit easily converts to a conventional over the back strap. The sling fits most crossbows on the market including TenPoint, Horton, Excalibur, Barnett, Parker, and Darton.

I have been using the X-Cross Bow Buddy Sling throughout the archery seasons in various states this year. During my Spring black bear hunt, I spent 4 days riding on the back of an ATV in and out of the timber. The sling made it easy to keep my crossbow safe, while being able to hang onto the quad. In the tree stands, I was able to sit comfortably with my crossbow cradled by the sling, leaving me free to film and take pictures of the many bear antics I witnessed. Traversing the hilly terrain to my deer stands was effortless, I was able to manage the crossbow and still have my hands free to use my flashlight and carry my other equipment.

The X-Bow Buddy Sling can be purchased at http://www.stringsling.com, various online retailers and in some sporting goods stores. For a low MSRP price of $39.99, you will wonder why you didn’t have one on your crossbow sooner! I personally hope to be stalking hogs soon using my crossbow and X-Bow Buddy.

HiViz with TriViz Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight

14 12 2013

hiviz-logoThe HiViz shotgun sight, called the TriViz, is a very reasonable priced sight that helps with your
turkey shooting and other shot-gunning situations.

TriViz by HiViz
Photo: HiViz

The TriViz is a front and rear combination sight set with green HiViz LitePipes, that utilizes a triangular shape to form your sight view, rather than crosshairs or a circle. The LitePipe tecchnology
ensures the sight is bright and easy to see, and includes 4 LitePipes in various sizes to adjust elevation, and there is an adjustment for windage also. The rear sight is designed to be
removable, based on the type of hunting; use it with the rear sight for deer and turkey, or without it for wing shooting. The best part is that this sight can be installed on all shotguns, with removable front beads and all the common vent rib sizes, without any drilling or tapping. The rear sight clamps onto the vent rib and tightens with 2 small bolts, while the front sight uses one screw and a tape strip to hold it in place. The unit made of blue steel and fiber optic insert is virtually weightless on
shotguns, with an installed weight of only 0.2 ounces, while the height of 1 inch keeps the unit streamlined .

I installed this sight onto a Remington Semi-Auto 12 gauge, after removing the front bead, the
rest of the installation took only a few minutes. While I was testing this sight out, by shooting a turkey target, it was extremely easy to acquire your target; there was no guess work on where you would hit it. There is adjustment available to sight it in, The various sizes of the triangular Litepipes allow you to change the elevation of your sight picture to perfect the positioning of the shot. But any of the first 3 shots out of the gun would have killed a turkey no problem.

I handed this shotgun off to my daughter who prefers handguns to shotguns. After just a short instruction on the use of this gun and sight, she also nailed the target perfectly. That impressed me immensely as she had never even shot this shot gun prior to this test.

The TriViz Shotgun Sight Set can be purchased at http://www.hivizsights.com/products/shotgun-sights/triviz.html At the “easy on the pocket price” of $36.55, this is a fantastic way to improve
your shooting without draining the bank.

Cass Creek’s Nomad Wild Boar Call Brings in the Bacon

14 12 2013

cass-creek-logoCass Creek Outdoors makes one of the few wild boar calls I have been able to find. Their Nomad Wild Boar Call with Moving Sound Remote gives you a wide selection of hog calls designed to help you bring home the bacon!!

cass creek hog call

Set up of the Nomad Wild Boar Call is easy.
Photo: Cass Creek

I set the receiver up near our hunting condo, aka blind. There are no wires to the call, and the receiver is very light to carry into the fields.I attached a lanyard to the remote so I would not have to search for it, while the speaker/receiver can be clipped onto your pack or belt.

You are able to control up to 3 receivers from the one remote, which will make the sounds as if they are moving toward or away from you area. The system has 5 calls you can chose from: Feeding Frenzy, Contented Feeding, Social Grunts, Fighting, and Feeding Piglets. My favorite combination was the Social Grunts coupled with the Feeding Piglets. I have heard the same grunts and squeals when we have stalked up onto a feeding group of hogs.

I started calling just shortly before dark, and it didn’t take long before we were seeing results. The various series of calls sound very realistic, and the volume control adjust in a clear concise sound. There was a lone boar cautiously making its way into our clearing. I made short work of the hog and quickly got set up again. I had a reddish sow come back in before long, and she also rode home with us.

Remember to check with your local regulations before using an electronic call, as they are not permitted in some areas. Where they are legal, these will be a huge advantage to filling your tags.

The Nomad Wild Boar Call is available for purchase at http://www.casscreek.com/Cass-Creek-Nomad-Wild-Boar-Electronic-Game-Call, Amazon.com, Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, various other sporting goods shops or at http://www.casscreek.com. The MSRP is $79.99. They also offer these calls in Predator, and Moose.

TenPoint Stealth SS Crossbow

14 12 2013

TenPointCrossbows logoDue to cancer surgery 4 years ago, I am unable to hunt with my compound bow. That necessitated in my purchase of my original TenPoint Crossbow. They have, since that time, taken a great crossbow and made it even better!

stealth ss imageTenPoint recently came out with their new Stealth SS which is their shortest and most compact crossbow to date. It uses TenPoint’s XLT bow assembly and their new FSB stock to come in with an amazing crossbow that weighs only 6.8 pounds. Anyone who has used an older TenPoint  will appreciate the ACUdraw cocking mechanism handle that now has a home incorporated into the stock, no more leaving your truck without it. The ACUdraw also helps make quick work of cocking even though the draw weight is 185 pounds.

They also have improved safety measures including a finger guard, and they made the bow lighter, quieter; all in all an efficient weapon. The TenPoint’s 3x Power Pro-View 2 Scope is easy to sight in, and stays accurate. The short axle to axle length makes this crossbow ideal for blinds and tree stands, any place that has a confined area. The kinetic energy is right around 100 foot lbs, depending on your arrow and broadhead selection. Couple all these factors with the complete line of accessories, and you get a crossbow to fit all your needs.

Bear Hunt Erins 227

7 foot black bear taken in Saskatchewan with the new TenPoint Stealth SS
Photo: Diane Hassinger

I used the TenPoint Stealth SS on a recent black bear hunt in Saskatchewan. The night I harvested my 7 foot black bear, the hunting conditions for both the crossbow and for black bear were much less than ideal. We had a storm roll in right as we were leaving camp. The winds were fierce and the rain was coming down hard. My bear crossed within 10 yards of my tree stand, and I pulled the trigger on my Stealth. The bolt shot straight and true, passing through his huge chest and lodging in the dirt on the other side. I watched as he bit at his side, and only made it 15 yards before crashing in the undergrowth.

Florida 006

I also used the TenPoint Stealth SS on a recent alligator hunt in Florida. I had equipped the crossbow with an AMS Big Game Retriever Reel. Once a large gator had been located I placed a great shot from the Stealth SS using the Muzzy Gator Getter points. It took all 3 of us on board to load the gator into the boat. TenPoint had just helped me harvest a fantastic 11′ gator that weighed 450 pounds!

If you are looking for a crossbow, the TenPoint Stealth SS is a great investment. It boasts a MSRP of $1,219; which includes the TenPoint 3x Pro-View 2 Scope mounted on a 7/8-inch fixed dovetail mount, the ACUdraw cocking mechanism, Instant Detach 3 arrow quiver and ambidextrous quiver bracket, 3 Pro Elite carbon arrows with field tips, and an Instructional DVD. You can purchase the TenPoint Stealth SS at http://www.tenpointcrossbows.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=479 or find a local dealer through the same link.
